CavinKare rolls out hand sanitizers at Re 1; hopes to repeat shampoo sachet story

NEW DELHI: Homegrown consumer goods maker CavinKare is launching one rupee sanitizers in sachets, repeating what it did to the shampoo market decades back. The Chennai-based company is leveraging its established Chik and Nyle brands of hair-care products, including shampoo and hair oils, to sanitizers on an immediate basis. “We are a company born out of sachets and sanitizers is the need of the time; we have rolled out the product within a fortnight responding to consumer need,” CavinKare chairman CK Ranganathan said. While Chik has been extended to sanitizers in 2 ml sachets starting at Re 1 and a few more entry-level packs,Nyle is being extended to sanitizers in bigger packs such as 5 litre ones.Ranganathan said sachets are being pushed through the company’s existing distribution channels across urban and rural markets, in kirana stores, modern trade and online.CavinKare had pioneered launching shampoos in sachets more than three decades ago in 50-paise sachets, a disruptive move that transformed the shampoo market, and led all big players including HUL and Procter&Gamble to follow suit.CavinKare, which also makes fairness cream Fairever and Spinz talc, will not increase prices even after the government price cap ends in June, Ranganathan said.Last week, leading sanitizer makers such as Hindustan Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser, ITC, Godrej and Dabur dropped prices of their brands by up to 70% in response to the government’s notification on price cap on the product.Sanitizers of most leading brands have remained in short supplies with demand escalating following the outbreak of the Covid-19. The ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution had issued a notification to cap the retail price of hand sanitizers at not more than Rs 100 per 200 ml and that packs should be priced proportionately, effective till June 30.
