Indian university opens first chapter in Qatar

NEW DELHI: A memorandum of understanding was signed between Maharashtra's Savitribai Phule Pune Universit(STPU) and Qatar's Milestone International Education enabling the University to set up its campus in Doha, with an aim to provide opportunities in higher education to nearly eight million Indian diaspora based in Qatar. The campus will be fully functional from next semester onwards.Interestingly, in spite of such a large number of Indians in the State of Qatar, no Indian university has its campus in the country. Realizing this gap, the memorandum has been signed to promote cooperation between the two institutions with the support of government of State of Qatar.Ambassador of Qatar to India Muhammad Khater al-Khater , Dr. Ibrahim saleh Al nuaimi, Secretary Ministry of Higher Education in the State of Qatar, Ali Bin Abdul Latif Almuhandi Member, Qatar Parliament and Qatar Chamber, Professor Nitin R Karmalkar, Vice Chancelor, Savitribi Phule Pune University along with registrar of the University, Ashraf Akhlaque, Advisor of the Ambassador of Qatar, senior officials of Qatar's Ministry of Higher Education were present when the MoU was signed on Nov 28.Memorandum will open new avenues and opportunities for Indians community in Qatar as they will not be compelled to send back their children to India for higher education due to the absence of the campus of any Indian University in Qatar. There are about 16 Indian schools in Qatar. Qatar is an emerging economy and a dynamic centre of conciliation for a number of global disputes. With a tactical and balanced foreign policy Qatar can establish itself as regional educational hub by such MOUs with different universities of developing countries. As India has proved its mettle in higher education during last two decades, such type of agreements and MOUs will certainly provide an opportunity of low cost higher and technical education facilities to its expatriate as well as local population.
